Challenge #14

In your own space, create your own fandom challenge. Post your answer to today’s challenge in your own space and leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

My challenge is called "Raise Your Ratio".

On your Dreamwidth profile there is a statistic:

A screenshot of my profile details which displays a highlighted area that reads: 605 comments received, 557 comments posted

Comments posted and comments received. If you divide these numbers, you get a ratio. I've posted 557 comments and received 605 comments so my ratio is .92. The aim of this challenge is to raise your ratio. My personal goal is to get above 1. But maybe your ratio is already above 1 so your goal is to get to 1.4 or 2. Or maybe you're a super popular blogger with an active comments section so your ratio is .25 - maybe then your goal is to get to .3. Whatever you want your goal to be is great, as long as you're raising your ratio of comments posted/comments received. So go make some friends and leave them some comments!

Oh dear. My ratio's at .68, which I think has something to do with importing from LJ back in the day. 20,000 comments to bring it up to 1! (assuming no one comments on my journal in the meantime)

Do you know what counts for comments in each category? Is comments left only ones on other people's journals/posts?

I love the idea and the name of the challenge (nicely alliterative!)

Looks like my ratio is 0.200 currently -- like [personal profile] muccamukk said, I think this must have something to do with LJ imports. I don't know how much I can move the needle on that, lol. Maybe I need to add more significant figures and target the thousandths or something XD

I think the issue is that the comments imported count as comments received, but the however-many-years of comments I left on other people's LJs (people who didn't import) aren't counted.

That's an interesting thought! Doing that kind of math puts me at 1.2, which sounds about right... It is probably not exact, because I have continued to use my LJ divergently, but I think it's probably in the right ballpark...

This is a pretty cool idea! Every now and again I take a look at those numbers and think "hmmm, do I receive a lot more comments than I give??" only to find out my ratio is... 1,2. Recent account privileges, I suppose. Then again, the challenge might be to if not necessarily increase it then at least keep it that way :)

Just went back to notice the order and I got it flipped because of course I did, LOL, numbers have never been my forte. But it's still cool! I stand by my statement!

It can also help, I think, when we get a little insecure about saying something: "huh, why am I being shy about typing a comment up?? I have the ratio to improve!!" :)

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who has noticed this ratio and cared about keeping it up :D But I haven't been paying it much attention lately, so this challenge is a nice opportunity to do so again! Hmm, it's currently 0.98—I'll get to work on it...

After adding my comments posted on LJ my ratio is 1.28 (without, still 1.26.) Aiming for 1.3 then :)

I'm also among the people with a lot of comments imported from LJ, but not so many posted here on DW. And if you add the fact that I haven't been very active on DW in general... Yeah, my ratio is VERY bad. XD All the more reason to try and raise it!

My ratio is 2.91, lol. I like commenting on other people's posts but I don't post myself, so I don't get comments. That was fun to see though.

ETA: I was also in a whole lot of landcomms when they still existed and am still doing challenges like halfamoon and fandom_empire, so that raises my comment count.

My comment ratio is currently above two, which makes sense to me, since I like being in other people's comment sections and I don't post a lot of things that invite comments, despite my best attempts to invite in people.

What I've found so far of the things that get comments are people life-posting, or if they've found a cache of people with the same fandom and fandom enthusiasm that they have. Snowflake does a good job of cross-pollinating, so there's a higher percentage of people who might stop by and stay a while, and it's also prompt responses, which can make comments easier to leave when someone has a hook to work with. And theoretically, communities are also for this kind of metering of people, but it's still hard to get them off the ground and developing a robust group without a lot of effort put into the promotion and maintenance of them.
